Course content
|
This course deals with congruences and differences of the Dutch and the Flemish society, the concepts of cultural identity in the Netherlands and in Belgium. It also covers the most important traditions, developmental tendencies and contemporary trends typical for the society in both the countries. Special attention is being paid for example to political systems of both the countries, actual political and cultural situation, comparing educational systems, science and research, sport or multiculturalism. The students get within the seminar an opportunity to discuss current topics of the society such as the situation of the minorities, drug problems and policies, unemployment or euthanasia which are being presented in the Dutch speaking media. 1. National identity, Dutch and Flemish mentality, stereotypes concerning the Dutch and the Flemish, 2. State festivals and important days 3. Political system, political parties, elections and and current political situation 4. Famous personalities and current situation in the society 5. Bringing up and educating a child, educational systems 6. Science and research 7. Multicultural society 8. Mass media (press, television, radio) 9. Culture (theatre, film, museums) 10. Sports and games, ways of spending leisure time 11. Urban concepts, architecture, environment

Learning outcomes
|
This course deals with congruences and differences of the Dutch and the Flemish society, the concepts of cultural identity in the Netherlands and in Belgium and with describing the most important traditions, developmental tendencies and contemporary trends typical for the society in both the countries. Special attention is being paid for example to comparing educational systems, media, political systems, elections, political parties, ways of spending leisure time, culture, science, research or sport. The students get within the seminar an opportunity to discuss current topics of the society such as the situation of the minorities, drug problems and policies, unemployment or euthanasia which are being presented in the Dutch speaking media.
Students orientate themselves in the given number of topics covering various parts of life of society in the Netherlands and the Flemish part of Belgium, they have an idea about the current situation in both the countries and they extend their range of active/passive vocabulary in Dutch.

Prerequisites
|
Successful completion of the course NIZ/1REA (Reálie Nizozemí a Belgie), Dutch language skills minimally A2 - CEFR level (the language of instruction is primarily Dutch).

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Student performance, Didactic Test
Carrying out homework tasks and other assignments systematically, being active during the seminars, presenting 2 famous personalities, presenting a chosen aspect of society (comparion of the situation in the Netherlands and in Belgium), passing the final written test minimally with 70 % result.
