Course content
During the course we work with the textbook Inleiding literatuurgeschiedenis voor de internationale neerlandistiek. There are 6 lessons: 1) Middle Ages - Mariken van Nieumeghen 2) Renaissance - Joost van den Vondel, Joseph in Dothan 3) Enlightenment - Betje Wolff, Proeve van opvoeding 4) Romanticism - Hendrik Conscience, De Leeuw van Vlaenderen and Geertruida Bosboom-Toussaint, Het huis Lauwernesse 5) Naturalism - Cyriel Buysse, De biezenstekker and Louis Couperus, Een zieltje 6) Modernism - Carry van Bruggen, Avondwandeling These lessons are supplemented with powerpoint presentations (in moodle) and pages from www.literatuurgeschiedenis.org, respectively material from www.dbnl.org.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course Starší literatura 2 is to familiarize the students with the older Dutch literature up to ca. World War I by means of some central works. Attention is also paid to literary terminology.
Deepening of the knowledge of Dutch and Flemish literature from the Middle Ages to about 1920. At the same time, the course introduces basic literary concepts and procedures.
Prerequisites
Successful completion of the introductory courses Úvod do nizozemské a vlámské literatury from the first year of study as well as the course Starší literatura 1 (winter semester 2023). Knowledge of Dutch at ERK B1 level. - Regular presence in class (maximum 2 absences per semester are allowed). - Completion of homework tasks (in moodle). - Seminar paper at the end of the semester - Reading a minimum of 5 books in Dutch and handing in book reports (12 February, 11 March, 8 April, 29 April and 24 May 2024).

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Seminar Work

- Regular presence in class (maximum of 2 absences per semester are allowed) - Doing the homework assignments (in moodle). - Seminar paper at the end of the semester (at least 5 standard pages = 9000 characters including spaces and punctuation). The topics will be posted in moodle in April. - Monthly reading of at least one literary book in Dutch and handing in a reading report (12 February, 11 March, 8 April, 29 April and 24 May 2024).
