Course content
|
The course covers the main features of modern Dutch and Flemish literature from 1880 to 1945. Course layout: Week 1) general introduction; Week 2) curriculum of the period 1880-1945; Week 3) "The Eighty Movement Movement" and Impressionism; 4th week) symbolism, decadent literature, Art Nouveau; Week 5) Naturalism; Week 6) commitment and "social art"; Week 7) World War I; 8th week) historical avant-garde: expressionism, constructivism, dada; Week 9) "New Subjectivity", Functionalism and Modernist Prose; Week 10) Everydayness and Return to Classical Forms in Interwar Poetry; 11th week) Committed Literature of the 1930s; 12th week) literature during the German occupation in 1940-1945 as a turning point; Week 13) Summary. Remark: For practical reasons, the teacher will divide the course in 6 bigger teaching blocks.

Learning outcomes
|
The course covers the main features of modern Dutch and Flemish literature from 1880 to 1945. The whole period consists of about two stages: (a) the beginning of modern literature around 1880 until the First World War; (b) the interwar period which ended with World War II. The aim of the course is to gain knowledge and understanding of the Dutch and Flemish literary canon.
Better knowledge of Dutch and Flemish literature from about 1880 to 1945.

Student performance, Seminar Work
Active participation in lessons. Read and analyze 5 works of the discussed periods. Homework and preparation of papers.
