Course content
|
This course deals with the basic terminology concerning Dutch lexicology and lexicography. The students are among others presented with an overview of processes concerning creating Dutch words, relations among various lexical units and the so-called false friends. Special attention is being paid to the differences between Dutch in the Netherlands and Belgium, development trends in the vocabulary of contemporary Dutch (eg the influence of English on Dutch) and the possibilities of using different types of dictionaries and corpora of the Dutch language.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course consisting of a lecture and a seminar is to introduce the students to the contemporary Dutch lexicology and phraseology. In the winter semester, students get an overview of describing Dutch vocabulary and an overview of the formation and interpretation of new words. The students are provided with relations among various lexical units, with the so-called false friends and with differences in the Dutch language used in the Netherlands and in Belgium. Attention is also being paid to the dynamics of the Dutch vocabulary and the tendencies concerning its development (such as the influence of English on Dutch). Additionally, various types of dictionaries and possibilities concerning exploiting Dutch corpora are being presented and discussed.
Students have an overview of vocabulary description, of various processes concerning creating nieuw Dutch words and of developmental tendencies of the contemporary Dutch. Moreover are the students provided with an overview concerning not only the differences between Dutch being used in the Netherlands and in Belgium, but also the lexicographic way of presenting the Dutch language and the existence of corpora of Dutch.

Prerequisites

Dutch language competences on the minimal B1 - CEFR level are required.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam, Student performance
Carrying out homework tasks and other assignments systematically, presentation of a topic of students' choice from the given list of topics, being active during the seminars, maximum 2 absences, passing the final written test minimally with 60 % result.
