Course content
"Europe" was an important topic of intellectual debate in the Netherlands and Belgium before World War II. After World War II, the first partnership between Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands (Benelux), already agreed in 1944, was the first step towards the European Union. In the further development of European integration, these three countries played an important role in which the European idea was a recurrent theme not only of public debate but also of Dutch literature. Course structure: Week 1) General introduction, role of the Netherlands and Belgium / Flanders in Europe; Week 2) Past voices: historians Henri Pirenne and Johan Huizinga; Week 3) Vision of Europe in the Netherlands and Belgium / Flanders; Week 4) Cees Nooteboom, Reflections; Week 5) Cees Nooteboom, Reporting; Week 6) Geert Mak, essays; Week 7) Geert Mak, In Europe; Week 8) Tom Lanoy, Fort Europa; Week 9) Koen Peeters, Grote Europese roman; Week 10) Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer, Gelukszoekers; Week 11) Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer, La Superba; Week 12) David Reybrouck, Zink; Week 13) Summary of the course. For operational reasons, the course is taught in 6 larger blocks.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide insight into the thematization of "Europe" in contemporary literature on the basis of literary works of fiction, non-fiction and reflective prose of recent decades, which attracted great interest not only in the Netherlands.
Knowledge of development of modern Dutch literature in contemporary European context.
Prerequisites
Interest in modern literature.
