|
Afrikaans is spoken by six million people as a first language in South Africa. Many more use it as a second language. Because Afrikaans is the newest member of the Germanic group of languages, it has simplified many of the difficult parts of Germanic languages. Afrikaans, for example, does not have strong and weak verbs. The aims of the course are the following: 1st To teach students about Afrikaans in South Africa as one of 11 official languages 2nd To teach students how to communicate in Afrikaans in basic situations 3rd To teach students the basic grammar of Afrikaans Recommended reading: viz. http://netherlandistics.upol.cz/
The students will learn how to communicate basic ideas and needs in Afrikaans. The students will learn how to write the past and future tenses, negative and syntax in Afrikaans. The students will attain some knowledge of South Africa and the complexity of the language situation. They have to pass a test at the end of the semester.

A reasonable knowledge of English or Dutch.

Oral exam, Student performance
Students must do set exercises. Students must attend all classes. Students must give oral presentations.
