Course content
|
History of animal research. The ethics of animal research. Animal research legislation. Animal facilities, classification and characteristics (conventional, breeding, GMO, SPF), specialised equipment. Animal welfare (laboratory and experimental conditions). Review of laboratory animals, descriptions of the species and strains, their specifics, advantages and disadvantages. Principles of experimental work (handling, labelling, testing, sampling of biological material, drug administration, microsurgery, anaesthesia, euthanasia). Experimental animal models (cancer, metabolic, neurodegenerative, infectious diseases). Case studies of animal models based on selected publications. Visit of the IMTM animal and core imaging facility (X-ray, PET/SPECT/CT, fluorescence, luminescence, ultrasound.

The students have to attend all the seminars and should have knowledge of animal welfare and basics principles of the animal handling.
