Course content
General bacteriology - morphology, physiology, pathogenicity and virulence of bacteria. Sterilization and disinfection. Antibiotics - resistance, adverse effects, characteristics of the most important groups. Laboratory methods for detecting bacteria. Collection and transport of infectious material. Microscopic methods for detecting bacteria, bacterial and viral culture. Serodiagnosis of infectious diseases. Special bacteriology - the genera Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Neisseria, Escherichia, Salmonella, Shigella, Pseudomonas, Haemophilus, Clostridium, Mycobacterium, Treponema. Virology - morphology and composition of viruses. Enterovirus, Orthomyxoviridae, Retroviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Herpesviridae and hepatitis viruses. Basic parasitology and mycology. Parasitic protozoa - Trichomonas, lamblias, Toxoplasma. Parasitic worms - pinworms, roundworms and tapeworms. Pathogenic fungi - Candida, Aspergillus and dermatophytes.

Learning outcomes
Basic knowledge structure of microbiology is presented. Students are exposed to the principles of work safety at a hazardous workplace, gain knowledge of proper collection and forwarding of infectious material.
The students will be able to implement the acquired knowledge and skills.
