Electrolyte solutions: acids and bases, strong and weak electrolytes, ionization of water, pH, equilibrium constants Kw, Ka, Kb, Ksp, hydrolysis. Electrolyte solutions: ampholytes, titration curves, solubility, slightly soluble compounds. Life and energy, principles of bioenergetics. Reaction rate, enzyme kinetics. Reduction and oxidation, galvanic cells, reduction potentials. Structure of organic molecules Reactivity of organic molecules. Selected organic and bioorganic compounds. The student should learn the principles of biophysical, inorganic, bioinorganic, organic and biorganic chemistry required for the study and understanding of biochemistry. He/she should acquire the basics of chemical reasoning and imagination, such as the concepts of molecular shape, intermolecular forces, equilibrium, energy transfer, structure-activity relationships, as well as thorough knowledge of molecules present in biological systems. From the practical point of view, basic laboratory manipulations should be learned.
The student will be able to evaluate how basic types of inorganic and organic compounds react either with each other or with other biological macromolecules, to predict whether the given compound will/will not adversely affect living systems, and estimate the usefulness of the compound for modulation of metabolic pathways in human body.
