Course content |
Topics: Lexicology as a science of vocabulary. Lexical semantics. Relation to other disciplines, especially philosophy and psychology. The word as the central unit of language and the concept of the lexical unit. Forms of lexical units. Notional and pragmatic components of word meaning. The stratification of vocabulary. Meaning relations between lexical units. Lexical paradigmatics and syntagmatics. Indirect nomination, relations based on similarity and coherence. Word play, signs of linguistic expressiveness and comedy. Phraseological and idiomatic formations. Vocabulary dynamics. Lexicographical interpretation of words.

Learning outcomes |
The discipline introduces students to the basic aspects of the lexical level of the Czech language. The aim of the lectures is to clarify the basic terminology and aspects of the field and to apply them practically to the work of a speech therapist in the lexical-semantic plane in communication disorders. The basic principles of lexicographic work and the relationship between lexicology, semantics, philosophy and psychology will also be clarified. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: Define the basic concepts of lexicology and clarify its position among other linguistic levels. Explain the difference between lexicology and semantics and the relationship of lexicology to philosophy and psychology. Characterise the lexical system of the Czech language, the vocabulary, the basic tendencies of its dynamics and the ways of its enrichment. Define the lexical units and the semantic relations between them. Define linguistic expressivity. Characterise phraseological and idiomatic formations. Define the basic lexicographical techniques. Apply knowledge in the analysis of the lexico-semantic level in patients with impaired communication skills.
