Learning outcomes
The discipline introduces students to the lexical language plane of Czech. The aim of lectures is to define lexicology in relation to other linguistic disciplines, to clarify the basic terminology of the field and to present a procedure for complex lexical analysis of the text. The core of the subject is the problem of lexical units and the meaning relations between them. The basic principles of lexicographical and etymological work and the relation of lexicology, semantics, philosophy and psychology will also be elucidated. Theoretical knowledge presented at the lectures is applied by students in seminars when working with authentic texts and exercises. After completing the course students should be able to: Define basic terms from the field of lexicology and clarify its position among the other linguistic levels. Clarify the distinction between lexicology and semantics and the relation of lexicology to philosophy and psychology. To characterize the lexical system of Czech. To define the lexical units and the meaning relations between them. Define linguistic expression. To characterize the phraseological and idiomatic formations. Describe the basic trends of the dynamics of the vocabulary. Define basic lexicography procedures. Etymological interpretation of the word. Perform complex lexical analysis of text.
