Course content |
The subject focuses on the relation of literature and film and puts the whole area in the context of education at elementary school. It brings a basic overview of the problems oriented to film adaptation with a special focus on Czech literature and Czech film. The subject of interest will primarily be a fictional film based on the literary masterpiece (in different ways), but documentary films will not be left aside. Part of the course will be film screenings. Topics: 1. Czech literature in the film. 2. Film adaptation: literature as an artwork. 3. Fundamentals of film analysis and interpretation (basic terminology and methods). 4. Ideological aspects of literature and film. 5. Current Czech document. 6. Film education (traditions, methods & activities, foreign context). 7. Literature of the 19th century in the film (nostalgia vs. history). 8. Great Czech novels in the film (L. Klíma, B. Hrabal, V. Páral, M. Kundera, J. Topol). 9. Literary and film genres. 10. Film adaptation in the 21st century.

After completing the course students should be able to: - To characterize the Czech literature in basic parameters in relation to the film. - Understand elementary issues in the broad field of adaptation theory. - Use the knowledge of Czech literature and Czech film in primary school education. - Systematically structured interpretations of cinematographic works in relation to literary works.

Student performance, Seminar Work
Requirements for students with ISP: - Submission of a seminar paper of 5 standard pages (excluding title page and final list of references) on the comparison of any book and its film treatment. The seminar paper should include: (a) a brief introduction of your chosen book (author, year of publication, illustrator, etc.) and film (director, producers, length of film, etc.); b) the main theme/idea/message of the publication and film: this is not a summary of the content, but an excerpt of the main idea or mission; c) a description of the differences between the publication and its film adaptation; d) a detailed interpretation of the film through the use of basic interpretative tools; (e) a list of literature, films viewed, etc., in the form of a valid bibliographic citation of your choice (ISO 690, APA, etc.). |
