Course description and content: Three strictly-defined divisions of Czech literature 1948-1989: official, underground and exile. Social realism in literature and drama. Prose genres in the 1950s and 1960s. Excluded from the literature: authors and censorship. Poetry in 1948-1989. Prose of normalisation and its genres. Women literature of the period 1948-1989. Jaroslav Seifert: his internationally acclaimed work in the second half of the 20th century. New poetic generation in the framework of normalized society. Exile authors in the 1970s and 1980s. Diversity of authors and themes of "samizdat". Official and unofficial drama. Underground in the Czech literature by 1989.

Course objectives: To define historical and cultural framework of the development of Czech society in European and world context between the years 1948-1989. To specify development of Czech literature and drama of the period 1948-1989 with focus on three divisions of literature (official, underground, exile). To name and characterize notable literary and dramatic genres of the period. To evaluate the work of important authors of the period and put their work in historical context. To analyze and interpret the texts in historical context and context of author´s work. To present student´s interpretation of chosen text. To argue upon artistic value of chosen works of literature.
