Course content
1st Definitions. Role and status of media in contemporary society. 2nd Basic typology of media (by technology, content, type of ownership and outreach). Situation in the Czech media market. 3rd Print media - the conditions of, the basic contours of the historical development, key milestones. 4th Current newspapers, magazines and other printed periodicals. Breakdown by periodicity, content, scope, readership, political orientation, etc. 5th Audiovisual media: radio, television and internet. Typology, classification. 6th Radio? conditions of, the beginnings of radio broadcasting today. Commercial, public service broadcasting. 7th Television? history and present of television broadcasting. Czech public and commercial television. 8th Internet and digital technologies. New media. 9th Media and ethics, media education and training. 10th Socio-economic context of media (finance, property, advertising, etc.). 11th Media legislation. Control of the media. 12th Digitization media environment.

Learning outcomes
The course provides a basic insight into the problems of media and their status and functioning in society. Students learn the basic concepts, categories and disciplines that can be seen in the study of contemporary media. Attention will be given substantial developments of media - print, radio, television and new media - as well as reflection of their current situation, particularly with regard to the situation in the Czech media environment. The students will learn basic methods of media legislation and regulation.
Students are acquitanced with the central themes and concepts related to the study of media. Students are familiar with the contemporary approaches in cultural studies.

The course provides a basic insight into the problems of media and their status and functioning in society. The students will learn basic methods of media legislation and regulation.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Compulsory participation in seminars (2 absences at max.)and active participation in the seminar discussions is reguired. Presentation of chosen topic. The final mark reflects the partial requirements in the following way: attendance in the class(40%), written test (40%) and seminar presentation (20%).
