Course content
Course structure: 1. Theory of society and the subject of sociology of lifestyle 2. Living standards and quality of life 3. Theories of lifestyle (structural functionalism, interactionism, postpragmatism, post-Marxism, postmodernism) 4. Changes in lifestyles (cultural frameworks of lifestyles, social determinants of lifestyles) 5. Biography and life path 6. The meaning of life and the consumer life 7. Space and time and lifestyles 8. Fashion, luxury and lifestyle 9. Generational and gender aspects of lifestyles 10. Leisure and lifestyle 11. The educational system of Czech society and the way of life 12. The role of the media and lifestyles 13. Final summary.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the discipline is to introduce students to the different perspectives of sociology as a theory of society on different aspects of ways of living in it and their interpretation, and thus to offer students of media studies sociological frameworks for thinking about the functioning of society, to delimit the field of sociology of lifestyle and to outline the basic problems and their theoretical solutions. In the course, students will be introduced to the interpretation of the problems of various aspects of lifestyle and life course components and to issues of quality of life and standard of living. Interpretations of some specific manifestations of lifestyle will also be discussed: the role of the media, fashion in eating and dressing, and youth lifestyle. Interpretation of basic concepts and theories of lifestyle will be complemented by their application to the interpretation of specific problems of contemporary society and discussion of various aspects of lifestyle.

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay

Requirements for credit: The student will receive credit for the paper presented and for active participation in the discussions at the individual seminars. 80% participation is required. Requirements for the granting of the exam: The exam will take the form of an essay defense, the topic of which the student/learner will choose from the topics of the course seminars. Length of the essay: maximum 9,000 characters with spaces. The student must demonstrate the following competences: the ability to define and interpret theoretically the way of life; the ability to categorise specific manifestations of the way of life; the ability to discuss different aspects of the way of life and to support his/her conclusions with relevant arguments.
