Course content
|
The course introduces the fundamentals of text analysis in media, cultural, and communication studies. It is designed for students who wish to familiarize themselves with the basics of text analysis. Students will have the opportunity to explore the core principles of selected types of analysis. The specific selection of methods and topics for analysis will be agreed upon with the participants. Proposed Topics for Summer Semester 2025 1. Basic concepts of textual analysis: text, discourse, method, analysis; types of analysis. 2. Empirical text research: The function of text as a research object; text as representation; sampling rules in qualitative text analysis. 3. Multimodal text analysis I. 4. Fundamentals of multimodal text analysis II. 5. Fundamentals of multimodal text analysis III. 6. Analysis of media dialogue I: The system of turn-taking in conversational exchanges, the role of institutions; typical interaction practices in media interviews. 7. Analysis of media dialogue II: Speech acts (word choice and topic setting in conversations); interactional behavior of moderators and guests; institutional, cultural, and socio-historical background of institutional dialogue. 8. Analysis of media dialogue III. 9. Membership categorization analysis I. 10. Membership categorization analysis II. 11. Basic principles of critical discourse analysis I: Key concepts and foundations (discourse, ideology); critical discourse analysis according to Fairclough, Van Dijk, and Wodak (differences in approaches). 12. Presentation of individual analyses in the seminar.

Learning outcomes
|
This course is an introduction to the methods of analysing texts. In a series of lectures, the students will be introduced to the complex text and semiotics analysis. In follow-up seminars, a range of media texts will be studied closely.
Students are familiar with major methods and techniques of chosen types of textual analyses in the contexts of social sciences. Student are able to apply methods of textual analysis when analyzing current cultural and media issues.

Written exam
REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING CREDIT: Attendance at seminars, with up to two unexcused absences allowed; any additional absences must be properly justified. Completion of partial tasks related to the individual steps of text analysis. COLLOQUIUM Analysis of a text of your own choosing. Written presentation of the analysis results and an oral presentation in the seminar.
