Course content
1. Introductory Meeting 2. Nonverbal Communication and (vs.) Nonverbal Behavior: Discussion on Terminology. Approaches to Nonverbal Communication. History of Nonverbal Communication Research. 3. Mehrabian's Myth about Nonverbal Communication: 4. The human face as a tool of nonverbal communication. 5. Facial expressions and emotions: the display of basic emotions. Tools for measuring facial expressions. 6. Introduction to the FACS system. Analysis of microexpressions. 7. Smiling and laughter. 8. Exploring Gestures: Possibilities for studying gestures I. 9. Possibilities for studying gestures II: Typology of gestures. 10. Nonverbal Lie Detection: 11. Nonverbal Communication from an Intercultural Perspective: Tactile or contact behavior (so-called tactile communication). 12. Nonverbal Communication from an Intercultural Perspective: Haptics and Proxemics II.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to outline the main topics of nonverbal communication and students will be acquitanted with common methods. The course will also outline an overview of empirically derived facts about non-verbal means of communication. Research methods will be supplied by specific examples and the students will be encouraged to explore their own point of view in this field. Nonverbal communication will be held in more broadly sense than taking the traditional concept of "body language". All nonverbal cues used in communication (in mediated as well as non-mediated interaction) will be included.

REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING CREDIT IN THE SUMMER SEMESTER 2025: Regular and active participation in seminars (up to 2 unexcused absences allowed, additional absences must be justified). Preparation for seminars, i.e., familiarity with assigned readings and the ability to discuss them during the seminar. Willingness to participate in practical activities related to the discussed topics (application of theoretical knowledge in practice). Completion of partial tasks in Moodle during the semester (a maximum of 3 tasks per semester). REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING CREDIT IN THE SUMMER SEMESTER 2025: An oral presentation on a pre-selected topic (or micro-project) and the creation of written theses for the presentation to be shared with other course participants.
