Learning activities and teaching methods
Lecture, Dialogic Lecture (Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming), Work with Text (with Book, Textbook)
Learning outcomes
The aim of the discipline is to highlight different ways of knowing (rationalism, empiricism, pragmatism) and different ways of linking theory and empirics. In the lectures, it is shown through specific cognitive practices that no way of knowing is completely objective. Lectures and seminars are based on the philosophy and methodology of science, and these general philosophical insights are applied to sociology.
Students know philosophical starting points of the conception of relation between theory a dates. They have in their disposal information about different solution of the problem of reliable knowledge. They are able to pass judgement on the problems connected with effort to obtain reliable knowledge.
Prerequisites
The prerequisite of the course is the knowledge of sociological theories.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Students must pass an exam in which they demonstrate knowledge of philosophical concepts of the relationship between theory and empirics, and various solutions to the problem of credible knowledge in philosophy. They must assess the problems associated with the pursuit of plausible knowledge. Study of the required readings listed at the end of each content thesis and for each seminar will be verified by examination. Without studying the relevant literature, the student cannot be certified. A student who has received credit for the presentation of a paper and for active participation in the discussion of each seminar may sit for the examination. Only one absence will be excused: you will submit an excuse slip that you write and sign yourself. I will not excuse an absence from a seminar in which you are scheduled to give a paper. You will receive a make-up assignment from me for unexcused absences. The extent and difficulty of the make-up work will depend on the number of unexcused absences. For each seminar, everyone must have read the relevant texts, not just those who are presenting papers.
