Course content
. communication / media studies (MS) and media communication (MK) 2. interdisciplinary nature of MS and space in the science systems 3. methodological and conceptual apparatus of MS, stocktaking and specification concepts of structure of MK 4. outline of the development of exploration of MK (overview of basic epistemological, theoretical and analytical approaches) 5. paradigmatic structure of communication/media studies I. (ideological sources and background for exploration of MK - Overview) 6. paradigmatic structure KMS II. (positivist-interpretative epistemology, postpozitivismus - Constructivism - a critical approach - Pragmatism) 7. MS as a Humanities/ MS as the social sciences 8. key concepts, personalities 9. cognitive-empirical tradition of MS (background, key concepts, personalities) 10. Technology can communicate traditions MS (background, key concepts, personalities) 11. critical-speculative tradition of MS (background, key concepts, personalities) 12. cultural traditions of MS (background, key concepts, personalities).

Learning outcomes
The course is aimed as an introduction into the issue of media studies.
- Ability of critical analysis of advanced academic literature in Czech and English - Demonstration their understanding of contemporary academic literature on the topics discussed in the class - acquitance with the contemporary themes in cultural/medial studies - awareness of existing knowledge of cultural diversity, approached from pluralistic perspective - ability to discuss on cultural, media and societal topics related to the Media studies
Prerequisites
Familiarity with basic theoretical concepts.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Active participation on seminars, cooperation on collectively realised research, final report writting, final knowledge test.
