Course content
|
1. Introduction to Academic Texts: Criteria of an academic text, academic vs. popular science writing, the purpose of academic work. 2. Where and How to Search for Information: Basic information sources, research databases, (annotated) literature reviews. 3. Selecting and Formulating a Topic: Defining research goals, specifying the topic using research questions and keywords. 4. Navigating Academic Literature (Abstracts, Annotations, Reviews): Selected academic genres in the social sciences. 5. From Topic to Method: Approaches to studying a selected topic and research methodology in the social sciences; general scientific methods. 6. Selected Methods of Data Collection and Analysis: Qualitative methodology. 7. Selected Methods of Data Collection and Analysis: Quantitative methodology. 8. Structure and Organization of Academic Writing: Canonical sections of an academic text. 9. Hierarchy and Formatting of Academic Writing: Specifics of academic expression: author, reader, and other subjects in the text (authorial voice vs. writer's voice). 10. Key Principles of Publication Ethics: Correct citation practices; direct quotes vs. paraphrasing vs. common knowledge; using sources, discussion, debate, and critique. 11. Structure and Coherence of Academic Writing: What holds a text together and gives it meaning (cohesion and coherence); academic writing style. 12. Language of Academic Style: Specific features of academic linguistic expression. 13. Pitfalls in Writing a Final Thesis Proposal: Common issues and practical examples of topics and proposals.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce journalism students to the principles of academic writing: from the core characteristics of academic texts, through topic selection and the formulation of research goals, to citation methods and bibliographic referencing. The course is designed as preparation for a bachelor's thesis proposal.
Students will gain information on options for writing a master's thesis, an overview of available topics, and the formal structure of master's theses. Students will become familiar with citation standards and the role of academic literature in a master's thesis. Students will acquire competencies in writing academic texts (with a particular focus on the bachelor's thesis). Students will be capable of searching for information in scholarly sources and categorizing and processing findings to produce a comprehensive academic text on a chosen topic. Students will be prepared to work on their own final bachelor's thesis under the guidance of their supervisor.

1. Compulsory attendance on the classes. 2. Completion of given tasks. The individual tasks will be given through the departmental educational system moodle (moodle.upmedia.cz). 3. Completion of final mock project of diploma thesis.
