Course content
|
1) The Nature and Context of Academic Writing. A Standard for Academic Writing. A Sense of Purpose and Audience 2) Choosing and Defining a Topic. Formulating a Thesis. 3) Strategies for gathering reliable information. 4) Types of research papers. 5) Research methods and techniques. 6) The Structure of a research paper: canonic parts of research papers. 7) Citing and quoting ethics. Types of plagiarism. Ways of avoid plagiarism. 8) Scholarly Expression and Style. 9) The Writing process: how to begin, writing techniques. 10) Revision and Final Manuscript Form.

Learning outcomes
|
The course focuses on the strategy and structure necessary to write complete pieces of research papers. The course is specifically designed to enhance the student's ability to present clear, concise, coherent, and thoughtful exposition and argument.
Students finishing the course will have acquired these competences: - They will gain knowledge about the formal arrangement of theses, bibliographic citation standards and processing of secondary literature. - They will obtain greater competence instructuring and writing academic texts (esp. bachelor diploma thesis) Student je způsobilý vyhledávat informace v odborných zdrojích a dále poznatky třídit a zpracovávat s cílem vypracovat komplexní odborný text na zvolené téma. Student je připraven pod odborným vedením svého školitele pracovat na vlastní závěrečné bakalářské práci. The student is qualified to search information in scientific sources and classify and process these findings in order to produce a comprehensive scientific text on a given topic. The student is ready to produce an own bachelor thesis under professional supervision.

Prerequisites
|
Students will read and respond to a variety of texts from different disciplines and produce a research paper using analytical and critical skills in response to non-literary texts.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Seminar Work
1. Compulsory attendance on the classes. 2. Completion of given tasks. The individual tasks will be given through the departmental educational system moodle (moodle.upmedia.cz). 3. Completion of final mock project of diploma thesis.
