Course content

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the media landscape of Central Europe and the specifics of the individual countries that are part of it. The focus will be on the Czech media market, the V4 countries and the German-speaking countries neighbouring the Czech Republic. The course will also include an excursion to a media institution or a creative media workshop (depending on availability).
The graduates of the course will be introduced to the media markets of the Central European countries and will get a basic overview of the most important media laws and censorship issues (official and unofficial), the main media institutions and their activities.
Prerequisites
Ability to read academic texts in English, to give a presentation in English, to engage in discussion in English.

Successful completion of the course requires attendance at seminars (a maximum of 2 absences will be tolerated), successful completion of interim assignments (e.g., reading excerpts from the literature), and completion of a final colloquium, which will take the form of an oral presentation of a selected and previously consulted topic in one of the last two classes of the semester. Suitable topics will be a presentation of the media system in the student's home country or a particular phenomenon associated with the country and its media realities (students will also prepare summary handouts with basic facts for their presentations, which will be provided to all course participants). Students will also prove their attention in class by successfully passing a multiple choice test.
