Course content
1. Course introduction. Orientation in the study of the media. Concept of the media (Laswells' 5W), communication (models, intra-inter-group-mass comm.) and culture. 2. Short History of the Czech Media: Periodization(s). Development of the press and audiovisual media. Censorship. 3. Study of the Media 1: Interdisciplinarity of the interest in the media. Schools (paradigms) of Media Studies. 4. Popular and Mass Culture. 5. Study of the Media 2: Media organizations. Media ownership. Public service media. Czech (and international) media landscape. 6. Fake news, disinformations, hoaxes: Using the example of anti-Islam initiatives in the Czech Republic. 7. Interest Areas of Media studies I: Media in the family, and in the lives of children and youth. The Media Education and Media Literacy. 8. Interest Areas of Media studies II: Popular Music Studies 9. Interest Areas of Media studies III: Studying television. Images of gender and ethnicity. Television crime series. 10. Interest Areas of Media studies V: New media, the participatory culture, fans and fandoms. 11. Interest Area of Media studies IV: representation of journalist profession in the popculture. 12. Learning outcomes
This course provides an introduction to the key topics in media and culture studies. The course aims at introducing basic concepts for the study of media communication, and to demonstrate how the media are related to culture and society. Using a wide range of theoretical constructions, students will learn to develop critical tools to explore media from different perspectives: media as structure, production, content and from an audience/reception point of view. In the second part of the course the specific areas of media studies will be addressed: TV series, depictions of age, gender and ethnic groups, media consumption and usage in families, media fandoms and the participatory cultures.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student will be evaluated based on following aspects: for the credit (Z zápočet) - attendance and active participation in the class - short presentation of chosen topics in the class (10 minutes) + short written handout of your presentation; for the exam (Zk zkouška) - written exam (multiple choice test based on the knowledge of the terms discussed in the class). The term of the test will be within the first week after the end of the class (eg. from 14 May onwards)
