1. Political situation in Europe (esp. In Great Britain after the WW2) and the formation of Cultural studies. 2. Knowledge and the power. M. Foucault and his contribution to Cultural studies. 3. Subcultures as a topic for Cultural studies. 4. Narrative as an antropological variety 5. Discourse on discourse. The second part. 6. Raw and cooked 1: biological determinism and reductionism. Apllication of Darwin evolution theory on culture as a possible theoretical framework: evolutionary psychology, memetics and the critics of eesentialism; 7. Raw and cooked 2: cultural determinisms and the issues of identity; the constructivist approach: contraesentialism in Cultural studies; 8. Identity and gender. 9. The current folk literature and its specifics: the urban legends, conspirational theories and ghossips. 10. The language and the ideology. 11. Learning outcomes
|
This course continues in the follow-up topics from the theoretical basement of very widely defined transdiscipline of Cultural studies (follow the course Cultural Studies 1 ? KZU/KSM). The new concepts from different humanities and social sciences areas will gradually introduced. The course focuses on postructuralism theses in dialogue with reductionism besides the topics of historical bacground of this filed and subcultures.
- Ability of critical analysis of advanced academic literature in Czech and English - Demonstration their understanding of contemporary academic literature on the topics discussed in the class - acquitance with the contemporary themes in cultural/medial studies - awareness of existing knowledge of cultural diversity, approached from pluralistic perspective - ability to discuss on cultural, media and societal topics related to the Media studies

Compulsory participation in seminars (2 absences at max.)and active participation in the seminar discussions is reguired. Presentation of chosen topic. The final mark reflects the partial requirements in the following way: attendance in the class(40%), written test (40%) and seminar presentation (20%).
