Course content
|
1. Introductory meeting: Overview of course content, completion requirements, and course organization. 2. Multimodality of communication: Approaches to the comprehensive study of multimodal communication events. 3. Comprehensive analysis of the communication process as an analytical foundation. 4. Selected approaches to the study of interpersonal communication. 5. Conversation as a fundamental unit of communication: Approaches to studying conversation in Communication Studies. 6. Investigating the nonverbal domain: Introduction. 7. Conceptualizing verbal and nonverbal behavior I: Analytical approaches to studying nonverbal aspects within traditional academic disciplines (social psychology, cultural anthropology, semiotics, and linguistics). 8. Conceptualizing verbal and nonverbal behavior II: Conceptualization of nonverbal communication, research methods, and key figures (Ray Birdwhistell, Paul Ekman, and Michael Argyle). 9. Limitations of nonverbal research in lie detection: Research myths vs. empirical data in deception detection. 10. Presentation of student projects I. 11. Presentation of student projects II. 12. Thematic course summary and review: Communication Studies as a post-discipline. 13. Final reflection, course evaluation, and closing.

Learning outcomes
|
The objective of this follow-up course is to deepen the theoretical knowledge gained in the first semester and place it within an analytical framework. Students will acquire the fundamentals of a comprehensive analysis of the communication process and become familiar with methodological approaches to investigating selected topics, particularly the possibilities of researching nonverbal and interpersonal communication.
Apply procedures of comprehensive and multimodal analysis to a specific communication event. Analyze natural conversation using the appropriate conceptual framework and terminology of Communication Studies. Select and practically apply appropriate research methods to investigate the verbal and nonverbal components of interaction. Design, develop, and orally present an independent project focused on a selected topic in the field of interpersonal or nonverbal communication.

Prerequisites
|
The course Communication Studies 2 builds on Communication Studies 1 and Communication Theory. Ability to read academic texts in English. Basic knowledge of social science research.

COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS: I. COURSE CREDIT (ZÁPOČET) Completion of partial assignments within the course (maximum of 3 per semester) + an oral presentation on a topic of choice + preparation of a handout (summary/theses) for other course participants. II. EXAMINATION (ZKOUŠKA) A comprehensive written exam (Communication Studies 1 + 2); Exam topics will be based on the subjects covered during the winter and summer semesters of the 2025/2026 academic year.
