Course content
1. Introduction to the media history. The beginnings of mass communication. Assumptions of a news development - economic, political, technical, cultural.The invention of the printing press, the consequences of the first "technical revolution" for the development of the media. 2. The first periodicals. Wider socio-economic, political and cultural causes of the development of mass communication.Censorship restrictions. 3. Abolition of censorship restrictions in England and implications for the development of printing. 4. The beginnings of modern Czech journalism. Pražské noviny as the first periodical written in Czech - its emergence, peak, and termination of attempts to restore it. 5. Czech journalism in the 19th century. The emergence of political journalism. Karel Havlíček. 6. The beginnings of mass press in the world. Competing of the publishers. 7. Mass media ownership. Mopolization of the press in England and the USA. Media moguls. 8. Czech Journalism - interwar period. I. 9. Czech Journalism - interwar period. II. 10. Czech Journalism in a time of so called "second republic" 11. Czech Journalism in a time of Nazi Occupation 12. Czech Journalism after the Second World War. Postwar cleanup. The new structure of the press. The path to power dominance of the Communists.

Learning outcomes
The course gives an introduction to the basic milestones in the development of Czech and world media. Attention is paid to the beginnings of mass communication, the first "technical revolution" associated with the invention of the printing press, the predecessors of periodicals, first printed media, the beginnings of regular news reporting and its development. The course explains the emergence of mass printing and changes of the media during the 19th century and the early 20th century. Attention is also paid to the legal aspects of development of the media and to the censorship.
To understand the basic stages of development of the media history in the broader context of political, economic, social and cultural history.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of history of Czech lands.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Conditions for granting credits: - Attending class regularly (max. 2 absences), actively participating in classroom discussions - Successful completion of ongoing trials - Written term paper Examination: defense of the paper and examination of gained knowledge according to lectures.
