Course content
|
1) Introduction to study intercultural communication, the definition of basic concepts (cross-culture communication, intercultural communication and international communication); 2) History of exploration of intercultural communication, interdisciplinarity; 3) "Cultural variability" and its dimensions; ethnocentrism or cultural relativism, individualism or collectivism; 4) Language and verbal communication 1: effect of language on culture, the issue of language universals; 5) Language and verbal communication 2: linguistic competence (Chomsky) or communicative competence (Hymes) vs. intercultural competence; 6) Nonverbal communication across cultures, cross-cultural non-verbal communication; 7) Nonverbal Communication 2: Analysis of non-verbal expressions in selected cultures (perception and expression of emotions; haptika, posturika etc.); 8) Influence of culture on perceptions of the world, culturally determined values, cultural relativism (Sapir Whorf hypothesis); 9) Attitudes and cultural stereotypes, the nature of cultural stereotypes and their impact on communication and interaction, preventing prejudice and stereotypes; 10) Intercultural sensitivity and adaptability, cultural shock and dealing with it, the process of adopting other cultures; 11) Cognitive competence and affection across cultures; entocentrismus, stereotypes, social and cultural identity; 12) Types of coexistence of cultures in a multicultural environment, communication in a multicultural environment.

Learning outcomes
|
The course is to acquaint students with the basic concepts of intercultural communication in the context of cultural studies. The course focuses on the cultural bound selected phenomena that affect intercultural communication: perception of the world, values and attitudes. Attention is also paid to relations between language, nonverbal communication and culture. Theoretical approach will be complemented by case studies of selected situations.
Can estimate the importance of intercultural issues when acting professionally. Students can evaluate to various forms, roles, and meanings of various cultures. Students are familiar with the different functions of culture, such that. Students themselves are able to judge how best to interact with individuals sharing various cultures. Teaching students to observe important cultural phenomena so that they are able to communicate and cooperate successfully with persons belonging to and sharing various other cultures " Allowing students to gain experience in how they have to prepare for living and working in a multicultural environment.

Knowledge of basic concepts of human communication.

Seminar Work
There will be an oral colloquium at the end of the term. You should be able to discuss the topics you have chosen for your final essay (6 standard pages).
