Course content
1. Print as a means of mass communication in the history. 2. Periodicals in Europe. The development of mass communication. 3. Development of the press after the abolition of censorship restrictions in England. Political Journalism. 4. North American journalism - the beginnings of a struggle for the freeodom of the press. U.S. Constitution and the First Amendment. 5. French press on the eve of the revolution.Abolition of censorship, newspapers in the service of revolution. 6. Industrial revolution and new technologies. growth of newspaper circulation. The beginnings of penny press. 7. Establishment of news agencies. 8. Elite and mass newspapers. 9. First World War and the media. Changes of content of media. Censorship. 10. Media between the wars. Media conglomerates. 11.The main trends in post-war development of media industry.

Learning outcomes
The course acquaints with the main stages of the world media history. It focuses on the major trends that dominated the development of media in developed countries of the Euro-Atlantic civilization. Attention is also paid to technological development in media bussiness in the 20th century and the development of radio and television.
Student gets an overview of the history of the world media, especially of the development of the media in developed countries in the Euro-Atlantic civilization.
Prerequisites
Deeper knowledge of the media industry in developed countries of the Euro-Atlantic civilization.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Conditions for granting credit: - active participations - successful completion of ongoing trials - written seminar work Exam: will be based on examination of knowledge of the above themes.
