Course content
1. History of Czech media in the European context.The wider context of emergence and development of the periodicals in the Czech lands. 2. The birth of political journalism. Political differentiation of the Czech newspapers. 3. The czech Journalism from the 1860s. Partisan press. Structure. Gregr´s Narodni listy. 4. First World War and the Czech media. Changes of media content. Censorship. Structure of the Czech press. Illegal press. Czechoslovak exiles. 5. Media system of the Czechoslovakia in interwar period I. - structure of media system. Media concerns. News agencie. 6. Media system of the Czechoslovakia in interwar period II. - partisan press. Independet press ((Národní politika. Národní osvobození. Tribuna. Lidové noviny). 7. Media system of the Czechoslovakia in interwar period III. The Czech radio and film as a new massmedia. TV experimens. 8. Media during the Nazi occupation. Censorship. Legal, illegal press. Exile activities. Emanuel Moravec and official media. Activist journalists. 9. Postwar Czech journalism until 1948. Changes in the structure of a press. 10. Czech exile journalism within years 1948 - 1989. Traditions of democratic press in new conditions. 11. Media as an active agent of the state power. Communist party and complete transformation of the media system. 12. Changes in the media system in 1960´s. New legislative norms. Temporary abolition of censorship.

Learning outcomes
The course acquaints students with the main stages of development of the Czech media. It focuses on major trends that shaped the media history in the 19th and 20th century. Attention will be paid to the development of Czech journalism in the context of political life since the 1860s and especially the partisan press as a political phenomenon accompanying differentiation of the Czech society in the late 19th and early 20th century. The course focuses on the basic trends of media development in the first half of the 20th century. Emphasis will be placed on the main features of the structure of the media first and second Czechoslovak republic, the specifics of media under Nazis and media development in 1945-1948. The course focuses on the development of Czech exile media over the years 1948-1989. Attention will also be given the technological changes of the media environment in the 20 century , to the origins and development of radio and television in the Czech lands. To understand the interpretation of the main trends in the broader context of the political , economic, social and cultural history and technological development. Attention will be paid to the legal aspects of media development and their regulation.
Deeper orientation in the history of the Czech media. Student will be able to understand and interpret the main trends in media history in the broader context of the political , economic, social and cultural history and technological development.
Prerequisites
Student must have a basic knowledge of media development in the developed countries of Western Europe and the USA.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

- active participation in lessons - Successful completion of ongoing trials - written seminar work. The test will be based on the themes of the course and the course of history of the world media.
