Course content
Content: An overview of the most general and serious problems of being, knowledge, nature, man and society from the earliest times to the period of transition between the Middle Ages and modern times. Topics: Pre-Socratic philosophy, Socrates. Plato. Aristotle. Philosophy of the Hellenistic period. Patristics. Outline of medieval philosophy - scholastics. Renaissance philosophy.

Learning outcomes
Students will be acquainted with the basic themes and the role of personalities who significantly contributed to the development of philosophical thinking from antiquity to the Renaissance.
After finishing the course students should be able to: - to define the meaning of ancient and medieval philosophy, - to clarify the development of Renaissance philosophical knowledge, - to characterize cultural and scientific thinking from antiquity to Renaissance, - to analyse basic texts of ancient medieval Renaissance philosophy, - to demonstrate the ability to work with philosophical texts of the respective period.
Prerequisites
The course has no study prerequisites.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Active participation in seminars, self-study, preparation for credit, passing the final test. Course requirements subject to an individual study plan: Completion of a colloquium on the content of the syllabus (see materials in the Moodle system).
