Course content
Contents (lecture and seminar topics) Introduction, concept and subject of political science, the concept of state, creation and termination of state Characteristics and functions of the state, power of the state, its legitimacy and legality, population, citizenship National territory, state's sovereignty, development of theoretical views upon the concept of sovereignty Constitutionalism, constitution and the modern state Forms of government State and the individual, fundamental rights Direct and representative democracy, electoral systems, referendum, the political party system System of representative government, the legislative power/branch, legislative process The executive, head of state, the government and executive authorities Protection of rights authorities Territorial organization of the state, unitary state (autonomy), federation (confederation), international association with the elements of federalism

Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is to introduce the basic concepts and institutes of the public law, the entities of the public law, to introduce the students to the problems of formation, existence and functions of the state, the basic mechanisms of state functioning and democratic system, horizontal and vertical division of powers within the state, state sovereignty and its internal and external aspects including the state's relation towards the international community. The subject innovation has been supported by the project Support of Interdisciplinary studies and Study Programmes Innovations at Palacký University in Olomouc, CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0091.
Students who have completed this subject will gain orientation and knowledge concerning the public authorities functioning both internally (internal state organization) and externally (international relations).
Prerequisites
Completion of this subject is not conditional upon completion of another subject.

Mark

It is essential that those students who would like to get the credit must succeed in the exam. The student is required to work with the learning objects, which have been created for the concrete subject and are available for authorized students in LMS EDIS.
