The teaching of Latin forms the basis for students of legal history to understand and interpret ancient texts. The duration of the course is 2 semesters. In the first semester the teaching is designed to focus on general linguistic competence, in the following semester it is specialized on legal texts. For students focusing on Roman law, the Latin Digest is the primary source for the final colloquium.

Assessment methods and criteria

Student performance, Written exam
The written colloquium consists of a translation and analysis of an assigned legal-historical Latin text and a subsequent discussion of this translation and analysis. The student meets with the instructor in class (the student is required to attend half of the seminars) and is also required to have one individual consultation to evaluate the subject of his/her research, which will then be a requirement for the colloquium.
