Course content
A religious meaning of a desert. A desert in Old and New Testaments. A spiritual meaning of a battle against temptations. Beginnings of a Christian hermitic life and of a monasticism (St Athanasius - Vita Antonii). A spirituality of Fathers (Apophtegmats). A spirtiual teaching of Evagrius of Pons, Jan Kassianus, Jan Climacus. A hermitic life in the East - hesychasm, Philocalia. A renewal of a hermitic life in Middle Ages in West - a reform of religious orders.

Learning outcomes
An introduction into the beginnings of Christian hermitic life and monasticism, into spirituality of the desert fathers and the spiritual teaching of selected representatives of the desert spirituality from the Antiquity to the present.
Students will gain a basic overview of the religious significance of the desert from the Biblical beginnings to the contemporary movements of the desert spirituality in the Western as well as Eastern interpretations.

A colloquium in groups with a presentation of new inspirations related to discussed topics.
