01. The history of Ukrainian language as a discipline. 02. The theory of the origin of Ukrainian language. 03. Periodization of the evolution of the Ukrainian language. 04. Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this course is to present the students with the evolution of all linguistic levels of Ukrainian language. We shall describe the key tendencies and analyze the old Ukrainian texts (selected writing from 13th to 19th century). The lectures are dedicated to the general problematic of historical development of phonetic, phonological, morphological, lexical and stylistic systems and the historical periodization and sources. We shall deal with translation, lexical, phonetic and morphological analysis of selected Ukrainian old texts. While reading the old monuments we shall pay special attention to characteristic phonetic features which differentiate the old language from the present status. The method used for transcribing the old text is reconstructive method.
Awareness of the basic evolutionary tendencies in all levels of Ukrainian language. An ability of complex analysis of old Ukrainian texts. An ability to compare the language of old Ukrainian texts from different periods with the present day language.

Prerequisites
|
A good knowledge of linguistic system of Ukrainian language (i.e. the primary linguistic disciplines ? morphology, syntax, phonetics, phonology and grammar minimum). Basic knowledge about Slavic languages and Old Slavonic. An advanced knowledge f Ukrainian (B2).

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Written exam
Attendance, max. 2 absences. Students are asked to make a presentation on a selected topic from the list of sub-topics we shall cover in this course. The general knowledge gained from this course will be examined at the written colloquium.
