Course content
1. Periodization of Ukrainian drama. Specification of genres. 2. Liturgical drama. 3. Theatrical schools in the period of Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo. 4. The Poltava Theatre and Ivan Kotlyarevsky, the beginning of the 19th century. 5. The origin of first professional theatres (Lvov, 1864). 6. Ukrainian theatre in the 1880s and 1890s. Emerging private theatres. 7. Drama at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. 8. Michailo Starycky and his contribution to Ukrainian drama. 9. Amateur theatre. 10. Theatre of the 1st half of the 20th century. 11. The theatre houses of Kiev. 12. Text analysis of a play. 13. Credit session.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this cycle of courses is to present the students with a comprehensive outline of development of Ukrainian drama from its origins till the present day. Students will get familiar with the separate periods and phases of the development, with the prominent figures of each period and their influence on forming the national cultural identity. We shall also watch selected illustrative material which should help the students to understand the genres. Students will also have the possibility to act in a performance to be shown at the end of the semester.
Students will get familiar with the development of Ukrainian drama from the 2nd half of 16th century till the 1st half of 20th century, the prominent plays and their authors and periods as well as with basic properties of drama.
Prerequisites
Regular attendance, max. 2 absences; a short presentation on a selected topic; reading the assigned texts and interpretation of the plays.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Basic knowledge of Ukrainian language, knowledge of basic terminology in drama (on the level of high school).
