Course content
1. The acoustic analysis of vocals and consonants in Czech and Ukrainian. 2. The specific features of sounds in Ukrainian. 3. Voiced consonants at the end of words compared to Czech. Reduction of vowels in syllables. 4. Exercising the correct pronunciation of Ukrainian phonemes l a ľ. 5. Exercising the correct pronunciation of Ukrainian phonemes i a y. 6. Exercising the correct pronunciation of Ukrainian phonemes ž, dž. 7. Exercising the correct pronunciation of Ukrainian phonemes z, dz, c, d, t. 8. Exercising the correct pronunciation of Ukrainian hard phonemes, š, šč. 9. Pronunciation of Ukrainian vowels e and y in accented and unaccented positions. 10. Pronouncing the sound group ťsja, šsja. Discrepancies between graphic and phonemic outlook. 11. Ukrainian euphony. Basic principles of Ukrainian euphony. 12. Correct intonation of clauses. Orthoepic norms. 13. Credit.

Learning outcomes
This course is dedicated to the explanation of basic phonetic concepts and is focused on the practical exercising of pronunciation, orthography and orthoepy. Apart from the necessary theoretical background we shall focus on the practical application in every day communicative situations - both written and oral. We shall exercise the correct pronunciation of Ukrainian sounds and accent which we will compare with the Czech accent. The audio-oral exercises (poems, fairy tales, and songs) are designed in a way that they help the students acquire correct pronunciation habits. We shall also deal with exercises focusing on the development of oral language competence in dialogues.
Students will get familiar with the basic elements of Ukrainian pronunciation.
Prerequisites
This course is designed for beginners.
