The course programme will be as follows: 1. The Living Tradition of the Church and Sacred Scripture in the Method of Catholic Theology 2. The Relationship between Faith and Reason in the Method of Catholic Theology 3. The Relationship between the sensus fidei fidelium and the Authority of the Magisterium of the Church in the Method of Catholic Theology 4. The theological concept of dogma; the historical development of the concept of dogma 5. Principles of the interpretation of dogma in Catholic theology

Learning outcomes
|
The course 'Method in Theology II' builds on the previous course 'Method in Theology I' and focuses on presenting and clarifying the method and 'points of reference' of theological work, which characterise theology as an academic discipline based on reflection on the Christian faith. The course will therefore cover a theological analysis of the status of Sacred Scripture, Tradition, reason, faith, the sensus fidei and the Magisterium within theological work. Subsequently, the course will clarify the theory of dogma, its development and interpretation both historically and, in particular, within the framework of the renewed method of Catholic theology following the Second Vatican Council, with an emphasis on the principle of the hierarchy of truths in Catholic doctrine (UR 11).
Students will be able to understand methodological issues in systematic theology through the study of 'reference points', which they will actively apply when studying other modules in systematic theology. Students will gain an understanding of the theory behind the concept of 'dogma' in Catholic theology, as well as issues relating to its development and interpretation.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam
Attendance at lectures (a 25 per cent tolerance for absences). Students must pass an oral examination covering the material presented and the compulsory reading assigned during the course.
