1) The semantics of the word 'theology'; the original meaning of the word and its introduction into the Christian context 2) The use of the term 'theologia' in the context of the concept of 'sacra doctrina' (Thomas Aquinas); a critique of the scholastic conception of theology; 3) Historical models of theology from the early days of Christianity to the renewal of the theological method at the Second Vatican Council 4) The relationship between the living Tradition of the Church and Sacred Scripture in the method of Catholic theology 5) The relationship between faith and reason in the method of Catholic theology 6) The relationship between the sensus fidei fidelium and the authority of the Magisterium of the Church in the method of Catholic theology 7) The theory of dogma; the development and interpretation of dogma in Catholic theology

Learning outcomes
|
This course introduces students of Catholic Theology into the method in systematic theology as "science of faith". The course deals with the terminological and historical achievement of the term "theology", mainly through the study of historical "models of theology". In the second step, the course deals with "reference points" for the theological task, i. e. with the living Tradition of the Church, Holy Scripture, faith and reason, sensus fidei fidelium and the authority of the Magisterium of the Church.
Students will learn about the development of the concept of theology within the history of Christian thought, as reflected in a variety of theological models. Studying the key principles of Catholic theology will prepare students to undertake further studies in systematic theology.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam, Student performance
Attendance at lectures (absences of up to 25 per cent of teaching time are permitted). Students must pass a final oral examination covering the material presented and the supplementary reading, and be able to apply the knowledge gained in their further theological studies.
