Course content |
The course Ethical Dilemmas introduces learners to an understanding of situations in which an individual or group of people is faced with a decision between two or more options that have moral implications; choosing one of these options may be difficult or unpleasant. Learners are therefore guided to acquire competencies in understanding and weighing values, learning and applying moral principles, and considering the consequences of actions. Ethical dilemmas will be studied in the context of the workplace, health care, science, education, politics, and personal relationships. Learners are introduced to the main features of ethical dilemmas such as conflict between values, uncertain outcomes, subjectivity of decision making, and moral decision making. Therefore, learners are introduced to the basic principles and steps of dilemma resolution, which include obtaining relevant information, identifying values and moral principles, conflict of values, weighing all options, evaluating the possible consequences of a decision, consultation, the moment of decision, follow-up monitoring of the situation, reflection on the decision and practice, and accepting responsibility for the decision made. Ethical dilemmas are presented as complex problems that are very often solved on the basis of insufficient information and under time pressure. Course Content: 1. Three domains of applied ethics 2. The application of ethical theories in practice 3. Theories of moral foundations 4. Strategies for coping with ethical dilemmas 5. Cross-cultural differences in ethical values 6.
