Course content
Essence and functions of language. Language sign. Synchrony and diachrony. Language as system. Langue and parole. Classification of languages. 19th cent. lingusitics. Structuralism. F. de Saussare. Prague school. Structuralism abroad. Generative grammar. Linguistic trends and schools, late 20th. cent./ early 21st cent. paradigms.

Learning outcomes
The lecture and seminars deal with selected issues of general linguistics in a broad theoretical view (Russian-Czech and Czech-Russian comparison). The starting points are principles of structuralist functional linguistics of Prague school. Further topics include comparison of language phenomena of Russian and Czech language systems, 19th and 20th c. linguistics (esp. in Russian, Czech cultures).
Proper knowledge of issues of general linguistics (applied on Slavonic languages).
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Russian language corresponding at least to C1 level. In case of foreign students, corresponding knowledge of Czech language. Knowledge of general linguistics as well as partial linguistic disciplines corresponding to the level of Mgr. study od Russian philology at Czech university. General knowledge of the issues in humanities and social sciences.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

- active participation in lectures, seminars - study of reference literature - submitting a presentation/ project/ paper - passing the exam
