Course content
The Nature and Function of Language. The Concept, Scope, and Methods of Linguistics. Synchrony and Diachrony. Language as a System. Langue and Parole. The Linguistic Sign. Center and periphery. Typological and genealogical classification of languages. Overview of the most significant linguistic schools and theories of the 19th-21st centuries. Interdisciplinary linguistic fields. Writing, Slavic writing systems, orthography. Principles of orthography in Slavic languages.

Learning outcomes
This course is designed for new students of Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian philology and should grant them with a general knowledge of the theoretical basis for linguistic studies. Students will get familiar with the basic linguistic terminology both in Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, and Czech, with the content of the separate linguistic disciplines and with the basic structure of the system of language, with language classification and with important linguistic schools. The course is taught in Czech.
Getting familiar with linguistic terms, schools, approaches and the development of linguistics as a science and its separate disciplines. Students will acquire the knowledge necessary for further linguistic studies.
Prerequisites
Designed for the 1st year students of Russian philology. Students should have a basic knowledge of Czech linguistic terminology as expected after graduating
