Course content
|
The course covers the basic thematic areas of translation theory and methodology. Students are introduced to the concepts of translating and translation, types of translation, translation disciplines, the role of the translator, and the relationship between the translator, the source text, the target text, and the recipient. Attention is also paid to translation studies as a scholarly discipline, translation organizations and periodicals, and basic literature in the field of translation theory. The next part of the course focuses on the translation process, functions of translation, translation methods and procedures, issues of equivalence and adequacy, non-equivalent lexis, and terminology translation. Theoretical topics are continuously supplemented by the analysis of concrete translated texts. Students carry out comparative analyses of source and target texts, identify translation transformations, shifts, and strategies, and learn to describe them accurately using appropriate terminology.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide students with a systematic overview of the basic thematic areas of translation theory and methodology. The course is conceived as a theoretical lecture covering key concepts and problem areas of translation studies and providing a scholarly foundation for subsequent practical translation seminars and exercises. Students will become familiar with basic issues related to translating and translation, types of translation, translation disciplines, the role of the translator, the translation process, functions of translation, translation methods and procedures, equivalence and adequacy, non-equivalent lexis, terminology translation etc. The course also includes an applied component in which students use the acquired knowledge in comparative analyses of source and target texts. Emphasis is placed on the ability to identify and correctly describe, using appropriate terminology, individual translation phenomena, transformations, and strategies, and on the ability to connect theoretical knowledge with the analysis of concrete translation solutions.
Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with the basic concepts, thematic areas, and problem areas of translation theory and methodology. They will be able to distinguish between basic types of translation, describe the specific features of the translation process, explain the functions of translation, and characterize selected translation methods and procedures. Students will be able to use basic terminology of translation studies and apply it in the comparative analysis of source and target texts. They will be able to identify translation transformations, shifts, and strategies, describe them using appropriate terminology, and relate them to issues of equivalence, adequacy, translation function, non-equivalent lexis, and terminology.

Prerequisites
|
A very good command of Czech and the working foreign language, the ability to work with scholarly texts, and basic familiarity with linguistic and literary terminology are expected.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Written exam
Regular attendance, continuous preparation, and reading of assigned scholarly literature are required. Students will work with selected samples of source and target texts, carry out comparative analyses, identify translation transformations, and use appropriate specialist terminology. The requirements may include a seminar paper, or an analysis of a selected translated text. The course is completed by an oral or written examination.
