Course content
1. The concept of ''drevněrusskaja litěratura''. 2. Fundamental principles of medieval aesthetics. 3. The author of a medieval literary work. 4. System of genres. 5. Language and style. 6. The recipient (a reader or a listener?) of the medieval literary production. 7. The oldest epoch of Old Russian literary production (11th-13th centuries) and its main features and texts. 8. The period of 14th to 15th centuries, its features and texts. 9. The 16th century and its grandiose literary projects of the Moscowian state. 10. The corrections of books as a conflict between cultures. 11. The 17th century as a transformative period between the Middle ages and Early modern era, tradition vs. new phenomena in Russian culture. Russian baroque. 12. Czech translations of Russian medieval literature.

Learning outcomes
This course is dedicated to Old Russian literary production of the period between 11th and 17th centuries. Using the knowledge of history of Russia and its literature, students will get familiar with the prominent epochs and streams in Russian literary production in the context of other art production of this period. We shall also focus on the differences between the aesthetics of Middle ages and the Early modern era, features of medieval genre systems and alterations of the relationship between author, text and addressee. Thus the previously acquired knowledge of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries will be incorporated in the context of development of Russian literary production.
Students will get familiar with the features of Old Russian literary production and the differences between the medieval and modern literature as well as its altering function in society.
Prerequisites
This course requires a substantial knowledge of the history of Russia.

Written exam
