Learning outcomes
|
An awareness of language typology should be a part of a future translator's elementary knowledge. This course aims, among other things, to show students how to use the knowledge of this field in their translation practice. Students should not learn the grammar rules of a foreign language mechanically, but they should understand that the rules are conditioned by typological differences or similarities of the foreign language and their mother tongue. Thus, students should be able to use this knowledge for better understanding of a foreign language's grammar and lexicon and to avoid making interferential mistakes.
Students get acquainted with the fundamentals of synchronous comparative linguistics, especially with language typology, and they learn how to use their knowledge in translation practice.

Students should have basic knowledge of general linguistics.
