Learning outcomes

Literary translation is seen as a specific kind of artistic creation. The texts for translation are selected in a way that the seminar will give space to discussion and creative approach to literary translation. As recommended in the Czech translatological tradition, we shall accentuate both the linguistic and extralinguistic approaches. The philosophical aspect we shall practically apply is represented by the hermeneutics as the interpretation of literary text. In the second term students will predominantly produce their own translations of texts which have been previously translated so that we can compare them and confront the solutions. Those who are interested will be prepared for the translation competition organized by the Philosophical Faculty in the University of Ostrava.
Students will get familiar with the specific features of literary translation and will acquire the skills to translate literary texts and evaluate creatively the translated texts.
