Course content
|
1. The subject and aim of lexicology and its place in general description of language. 2. Processes of word formation. 3. Motivation. 4. Onomasiological categories. 5. Derivation. 6. Composition and its types. 7. Univerbation and multiverbation in the contemporary Polish language. 8. Abbreviation and other ways of condensation in the contemporary Polish language. 9. Internationalisms and nationalisms in Polish. 10. Typological features of Polish at lexical level. 11. Semantics of words, relation between sigifiant and signifié, types of meanings. 12. Word exopessivity, types of expressivity and how to express it. Frazeology and idioms. 13. Homonymy and polysemy, hyperonymy and hyponymy.

Learning outcomes
|
In this course, the focus is put on the lexcicological and lexicographic theories and on the terminology. The basic onomasiologic approaches in Polish will be treated in comparison with word formation in Czech (derivation, composition, univerbation, etc.). In the seminars, the focus is put on practical lexicographic and wordforming skills: tautology, mutation, transposition, modification: expressivity, demunitives, pejoratives, feminin form, nomina insturemnti, nomina loci, etc.).
The students will acquire competences as stated in the syllabus.

Prerequisites
|
Having successfully completed the course "Praktická cvičení konverzační", reading of academic papers in Czech and practical study texts in Polish.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance
Regular and active attendance - 80%, two absences are permitted; fulfilment of all partial assessment tasks; presentation; individual study of Polish texts.
