Course content
Topics for each week: 1) Introduction to Romanticism. 2) Masterpieces of Romantic literature: Adam Mickiewicz. 3) Masterpieces of Romantic Literature: Adam Mickiewicz. 4) Masterpieces of Romantic Literature: Juliusz Słowacki. 5) Masterpieces of Romantic Literature: Cyprian Kamil Norwid. 6) Aleksander Fredro, author of comedies. 7) The visionary and anti-Semite Zygmunt Krasiński. 8) Introduction to positivism. Positivist poetry: Adam Asnyk. 9) Maria Konopnicka's small forms. 10) Provincial writer Eliza Orzeszkowa. 11) Bolesław Prus the city writer. 12) Henryk Sienkiewicz's "heart uplifting" writing.

Learning outcomes
This course will provide an introduction to the basics of the history of Polish literature of the 19th - the period of Romanticism and Positivism. Aims: Introducing students to the most important works of Polish literature of the Romantic and Positivist periods and to the key literary issues of these periods. Developing the ability to analyse and interpret literary texts and to place them in different contexts, e.g. historical, political, philosophical. Developing the ability to work with online databases of scholarly articles.
Very good understanding of the discussed literary content, very good ability to analyse and interpret literary texts and to place them in historical and cultural context.
Prerequisites
Very good knowledge of the history of Polish literature until the 19th century.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Attendance: max. 2 absences per semester. Being familiar with required readings, active participation in discussions, independent work at home, oral presentation of current assignments in class, preparation of a presentation. Assessment criteria: active participation - 40%. paper - 30%. seminar paper - 30%.
