1) Introduction to Romanticism. 2) Masterpieces of Romantic literature: Adam Mickiewicz. 3) Masterpieces of Romantic literature: Adam Mickiewicz. 4) Masterpieces of Romantic literature: Juliusz Słowacki. 5) Masterpieces of Romantic literature: Cyprian Kamil Norwid. 6) Comedy writer Aleksander Fredro. 7) The visionary and anti-Semite Zygmunt Krasiński. 8) Introduction to positivism. Positivist poetry: Adam Asnyk. 9) Small forms by Maria Konopnicka. 10) Eliza Orzeszkowa the provincial writer. 11) Bolesław Prus the writer of the city. 12) Henryk Sienkiewicz's writing 'to comfort the heart'.

Learning outcomes
|
This course will provide an introduction to the history of Polish literature of the Romantic and Positivist era. Objectives: Introducing students to the most important works of Polish literature of the Romantic and Positivist era and to the key literary issues of these periods. Developing the ability to analyse and interpret literary texts and to place them in different contexts, e.g. historical, political, philosophical. Developing the ability to work with online databases of scientific articles.
Very good understanding of the discussed literary content, very good ability to analyse and interpret literary texts and to place them in historical and cultural context.

Prerequisites
|
Good knowledge of the history of Czech literature in the European context. Very good knowledge of Polish literature of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Enlightenment. Ability to analyze literary works and to work with secondary literature and internet sources.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam
Attendance: max. 2 absences per semester. Being familiar with required readings, active participation in discussions, independent work at home, oral presentation of current assignments in class, preparation of a presentation. Assessment criteria: active participation - 25% oral presentation - 25 % oral exam - 50%
