Course content
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic topics of ecolinguistics and ecocriticism. Students will learn to discuss issues related to ecology, the climate crisis, sustainability, and biodiversity in a foreign language. They will critically read both journalistic and literary texts with ecological themes. The course will also include lectures or workshops led by invited guestsexperts in ecocriticism and ecolinguistics. **Proposed Topics (Course Outline):** 1. **The Anthropocene and Other "-cenes"** - In what epoch are we really living? Explanation of alternative approaches and perspectives (Anglocene, Urbanocene, Technocene, Necrocene, Symbiocene). 2. **The New Eco-vocabulary** - How do we talk about climate? From the Anthropocene to the Symbiocene. New humanities / posthumanism. 3. **Critique of Consumer Society** - Overproduction, overconsumption - consequences of excessive consumption (waste, diseases, environmental pollution, debt, child labor). 4. **From Consumer Society to Slow Food, Slow Fashion, Slow City** - How can we personally contribute to climate improvement? (local products, transportation, seasonal food, waste sorting, etc.) 5. **Tourism vs. Agritourism** - The impact of mass tourism on the climate (overtourism). Two perspectives: tourist vs. residents of tourist destinations, and the impact on the planet. 6. **What Language Do We Communicate In?** - An ecolinguistic perspective (lingua nativa, lingua receptiva, lingua franca, lingua fracta, language imperialism, protection of minority languages, legislation). What language do people speak in the Polish-Czech borderlands? Commentary on the results of cross-border communication research. 7. **Biodiversity I - FOREST** - Explanation of how the forest system functions and causal relationships between its components. The importance of forests/trees and their place in the ecosystem. How do we protect our forests? (legislation, parks, protected areas, etc.) Overexploitation vs. reforestation. 8. **Simona Kossak: The Saga of the Białowieża Primeval Forest** - The extraordinary story of an ordinary woman and her fight to save the forest. Discussion of Simona Kossak's book on the forest and the 2024 film about her. 9. **Biodiversity II - ANIMALS AND PLANTS** - Protection of endangered species. Ethics of domestic farming / factory farming. Film: *What is the Price of Meat?* Vegetarianism/veganism. Animal protection laws and organizations. 10. **Biodiversity III - WATER** - A vital element of the ecosystem. Why clean rivers and oceans matter. The effects of global warming on aquatic biodiversity and the impact on our lives. Film: *RAWA - The Strangest River in the World*. 11. **Eco-icon Greta Thunberg** - Media portrayal of Greta in Polish and Czech press. Critical analysis of her speeches at climate summits (structure, persuasive strategies, meme analysis, microexpression analysis). 12. **BIO-MOSAIC** - Interactive workshop on biodiversity. Certified workshop on the interconnections within ecosystems.

Prerequisites
The student knows Polish at a minimum level of A2-B1, reads Polish texts and understands them.

80% active participation in class, preparation for lessons - reading assigned texts, presentation on a selected topic.
