Learning outcomes
The course is intended for students of all Polish philology programmes and is also open to non-Polish-philology students. The course is taught mainly in Czech, but to some extent we also work with Polish sources and materials. Therefore, at least a basic (passive) knowledge of Polish is required. The course will present an overview of Polish history from the beginnings of Polish statehood in the 10th century AD to the most important political and social milestones of the present day. The topics are arranged chronologically by major sections of Polish history (according to the traditional division) and supplemented by related topics on which students work independently, and their selection is to some extent arbitrary, according to their interests and focus. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the most important events, figures, phenomena and milestones of Polish history and thus prepare them for practice - not only the scientific and professional one, but also for everyday encounters with Polish culture and Poles as friends or business partners. Knowledge of Polish history is an important prerequisite for understanding the Polish mentality and attitudes in life and can have a major impact on the success of any dealings with a Polish partner. Emphasis will be placed on Polish-Czech relations and contacts in the past. In addition to traditional specialist texts, the course will also include less traditional ones, such as comics, animated videos, virtual tours or digitised visual and textual material from the collections of Polish museums and libraries.
The students will acquire all competences as stated in the syllabus.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of European and Czech history.
